Double Crochet (dc)
In a US pattern this is called double crochet (dc). In a UK pattern the same stitch is called treble (tr). Same stitch, different name — check which country wrote your pattern before you start.
One yarn over, insert the hook, pull up a loop, then clear the loops two at a time. The workhorse of garments, granny squares and most blanket patterns.
The Japanese name 長編み (naga-ami) literally means "long knitting".

Watch out for
US dc equals UK tr. If a pattern's gauge swatch comes out roughly a third too short, you are almost certainly reading a UK pattern with US assumptions.
