Single Crochet (sc)
In a US pattern this is called single crochet (sc). In a UK pattern the same stitch is called double crochet (dc). Same stitch, different name — check which country wrote your pattern before you start.
The shortest of the working stitches and the backbone of amigurumi. Insert the hook, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through both loops.
The Japanese name 細編み (koma-ami) literally means "fine knitting".

Watch out for
This is the most dangerous term in crochet. US 'single crochet' and UK 'double crochet' are the same stitch, and the abbreviation 'dc' means something completely different in each convention.
