False friend warning The words double crochet mean a different stitch depending on which side of the Atlantic the pattern was written. In a UK pattern, double crochet (dc) is what a US pattern calls single crochet. Check the pattern's stated convention before you start.

The Japanese name (koma-ami) literally means "fine knitting".

Watch out for

This is the most dangerous term in crochet. US 'single crochet' and UK 'double crochet' are the same stitch, and the abbreviation 'dc' means something completely different in each convention.
