Extended Single Crochet (esc)

The short answer

In a US pattern this is called extended single crochet (esc). In a UK pattern the same stitch is called extended double crochet (edc). Same stitch, different name — check which country wrote your pattern before you start.

A single crochet with an extra chain worked in the middle, giving a stitch taller than single crochet but more solid than half double crochet.
