Half Double Crochet (hdc)
In a US pattern this is called half double crochet (hdc). In a UK pattern the same stitch is called half treble (htr). Same stitch, different name — check which country wrote your pattern before you start.
One yarn over before inserting the hook, then all three loops come off together. Sits between single and double crochet in height and produces a softer, slightly denser fabric than double crochet.
The Japanese name 中長編み (chuu-naga-ami) literally means "medium-long knitting".

Watch out for
The third loop at the back of an hdc row is a distinct working loop. Japanese and US patterns sometimes ask you to work into it specifically.
